We have been able to enjoy reading a great deal of non-fiction! The students have been able to select many leveled Newsela articles based on their interest to present to the class. We've learned about topics such as: a thirteen year old creating a braille printer from a Lego design; one of the first female football coaches; Mrs. Obama's healthy programs for teens; holiday celebrations around the world; and even silly cat videos becoming a huge fad. We love to read non-fiction because we are able to learn through our interests and share our ideas about topics! I'm even reading a new non-fiction text entitled Passionate Learners that I've showed to my class!
We also were able to read "SuperCroc" in our text about scientists that study dinosaur fossils in Niger (which we found on our map). The skeleton found showed that SuperCroc could grow to 40 feet long (which our class measured is almost the size of the new wing in our school). We used our math skills, and realized that Supercroc weighed as much as 10 tons! Imagine running into a creature that big!

Our crew was also so lucky to have had an AMAZING opportunity to Skype with an aquarium in North Carolina and learn about reptiles. Our class was able to learn about alligators and why it is so important to protect our wildlife! We learned all about alligators and even were able to "meet" a live baby alligator. The presenter was such a fabulous teacher! She knew so much about alligators, and was really able to explain facts & answer the students' questions so well. I can't thank her enough for giving our crew such an awesome learning opportunity!
One of our students thought that this was the best Skype that we have ever participated in! The presenter talked a little about her career (what is needed to become a wildlife presenter & how important it is to love what you do). I hope my students grow up to do what they love as well! :) | |
